Tamworth, NSW. 1940. Portrait of NX47190 Corporal (Cpl) Athol (Tom) Pledger at Tamworth Camp. Cpl Pledger later served with 2/21st Infantry Battalion (known as Gull Force), and was sent to Ambon in 1941, where he was taken Prisoner of War (POW) by the Japanese in 1942. He was later transferred to a POW camp on Hainan Island near China, along with 300 other prisoners. After being released by United States soldiers in 1945 he served as an Australian witness for the war crimes trials held in Hong Kong in 1948. (Donor A. Pledger)
