Grave of 142 Corporal (Cpl) John Butcher, 11th Battalion and two British servicemen. A labourer of North Perth, Western Australia prior to enlistment as a Private, he embarked from Fremantle aboard HMAT Ascanius on 2 November 1914 for Gallipoli. He was promoted to Cpl on 15 August 1915. Cpl Butcher was hospitalised with enteric fever on 24 August 1915 and evacuated to Floriana Military Hospital, Malta, where he died of the disease on 5 September 1915. He was aged 30 years.
