Description

The graves of 289 Corporal (Cpl) Clarence Rupert Roberts, 8th Battalion, 1450 Private (Pte) Sidney Lamond, 1st Battalion and 454 Cpl Howard Taylor McKern, 4th Battalion. Cpl Roberts, an architectural draughtsman from Ballarat, Vic prior to enlistment, embarked with C Company from Melbourne on HMAT Benalla on 19 October 1914. Whilst serving at Gallipoli, he was wounded in action and was evacuated to Malta where, at Valetta Hospital on 3 August 1918, aged 21, he succumbed to his wounds. Pte Lamond, a mason from Rockdale, NSW prior to enlistment, embarked with the 3rd Reinforcements from Sydney on HMAT Seang Choon on 11 February 1915. After being wounded at Gallipoli, he was evacuated to Malta where, at Floriana Military Hospital on 15 August 1915, aged 22, he died as a result of his wounds. Cpl McKern, a farmer from Mosman, NSW prior to enlistment, embarked with the rank of Lance Corporal alongside his brother 427 Pte Alan Charles McKern with C company from Sydney on HMAT Euripides on 20 October 1914. Later promoted to Corporal, he too was wounded in action at Gallipoli and evacuated to Malta where, on 16 August 1915, aged 22, he died as a result of his wounds. All three men are buried in the Pieta Military Cemetery, Malta. Pte Alan McKern was later promoted to Sergeant and returned to Australia on 15 August 1915 and was medically discharged.
