Sullivan, Henry Ernest (Trooper/Private)

Annotated typed transcription of the personal diary of No. 1034 Trooper (later Private) Henry Ernest Sullivan from his enlistment in May 1915 until his return to Australia from Palestine in December 1916. The diary describes his journey to Egypt, training at Serapeum and active service in Palestine from April 1916, initially in patrolling operations with B Squadron, 5th Light Horse Regiment between Kantara, Katia and Romani, mainly around the Dueidar and Hill 70 area. In late June he transferred to the 1st Field Squadron Engineers based near Kantara, and participated in stable construction, installation of troughs for horses and camels, and sinking of wells, extending to Bir El Abd, Oghratina and Bir Salmana. The diary describes fighting before and during the Battle of Romani. Sullivan was evacuated because of illness in September.
