Studio portrait of 4815A Private (Pte) John Richard Nixon Smith, 31st Battalion from Penhurst, Queensland. A 22 year old farmer prior to enlisting on 27 October 1916, he embarked for overseas with the 13th Reinforcements from Sydney on 7 February 1917 aboard HMAT Wiltshire. While serving with the Battalion in France, Pte Smith contracted pneumonia and died on 24 October 1918. He is buried in the St Sever Cemetery Extension, Rouen, France.
