Paybook photograph of NX3832 Corporal (Cpl) Roland Le Folet Hoffmann, 6th Division Intelligence, Australian Army Intelligence Corps. Cpl Hoffmann (whose name was sometimes spelled Hoffman), a journalist before enlisting on 20 October 1939, had been the founding editor of AIF News, the first army newspaper of the Second World War. He was described by Gavin Long, the Official Historian, as 'a talented journalist and ardent soldier'. He was captured while defending the island of Crete against the German land and airborne invasion in 1941. Cpl Hoffmann, aged 38, died of self inflicted wounds on 3 August 1945 in London, after repatriation from Germany. He was the husband of Mrs E. E. Hoffman, of Sydney, NSW. He is buried in the Brookwood Military Cemetery, London, Section 4, Row F, Plot 23. (Photograph supplied by the Army's Soldier Career Management Agency.
