Description
Handwritten and typescript letters, newspaper clippings and photographs of Mrs Zenaida (Zena) Canning dated 1941-1946. Mrs Canning and her young daughters, Jeanette and Loretta were interned at Santo Tomas Internment Camp, Manila 1942-1945 following their evacuation from Shanghai, China aboard the "Anhui" originally bound for Australia. The letters are from Mrs Canning's husband James Robert (Jimmie) Canning, a businessman in Shanghai, who was later interned in China. They depict the hardships of civilian internee life and the splitting up of families. Mrs Canning and her daughters eventually came to Australia aboard the USAT "David C. Shanks" arriving 1945. A list of the photographs is included. See also Photographic collection.
