Description

A nurse prepares to treat a soldier for `trench feet' disease (oedema) using electro-therapy in the dressing room of the No. 1 Australian Auxiliary Hospital (1AAH). Note the large ceramic tubs and electrolyis apparatus in operation and the bandages around the man's swollen leg and foot. Image from album in a collection relating to the service of Matron Ethel Gray. Matron Gray enlisted in early 1915 and was sent to England to set up the 1st Australian Auxiliary Hospital at Harefield Park, Harefield. She was matron at this hospital until December 1916 when she was sent to the 2nd Australian General Hospital (AGH) at Wimereux, France. Returning to England in 1919, she joined No 1 AGH at Sutton Veny till her return to Australia. She received the Royal Red Cross 1st Class in September 1916 and a CBE in October 1919 along with the Medaille de 3me Classe de la Reconnaissance Francaise.
