Description
Typescript of a memoir written by NX6561 Private Mac Reid, titled: "I Mined Coal In Japan". Reid served with the 2/19 Battalion and was captured by the Japanese forces. He worked on the Burma-Thai Railway (referred to in the memoir) before being transported to Japan for work in coal mines. The memoir gives detailed descriptions of the work, harsh treatment by the Japanese soldiers, his deteriorating physical condition and increasing need for hospital treatment, sudden abandonment of prisoners by the Japanese troops at the end the war and his eventual rehabilitation.
