Description
Gallipoli, Turkey. c. 1915-05. Side view of the grave, in the 3rd and 4th Battalion trenches, of Lieutenant Colonel Astley John Onslow Thompson VD, Commanding Officer of the 4th Battalion. He led the Battalion's advance on 1915-04-26 (the day after the landing) across the 400 Plateau and was killed in the withdrawal somewhere near Owen's Gully. His body was carried back some distance by the Adjutant and was buried in the trenches. Note the wooden cross marking the top of the burial site.
