Description
Diary (in 5 instalments) and letters describing food shortages on troopship, Heliopolis, picket duty in Cairo and forming a reserve brigade in Abbassia. Mentions morale problems resulting from changes to AIF structure, and experiences in France, particularly marching on cobblestones, action on the Somme (esp. Sailly and Pozieres) and Hill 60 with 1st Aust. Light Trench Mortar Battery. Mentions high loss of lives, mud, relative safety of artillery in comparison to infantry, praises stretcher bearers. Dunlop was wounded at Pozieres, returned to Australia.
