Description
Anzac Cove, Gallipoli. 1915-12-19. Two soldiers crouch in the entrance to a tunnel on the right flank from the front line towards Turk trenches. The tunnel was used by members of No. 2 Field Company, Royal Australian Engineers, and is shown here on the day of their evacuation. Note the sign and the empty shell case hanging above the entrance. It was known as a gas gong and was there in case of gas attack. Note also the timbering of the tunnel and typical dugout in the wall of the trench with waterproof sheet covering.
