Race down the Darling DPR/TV/1588
Soldiers of 1 Task Force from Holsworthy near Sydney turning sailors this week when they set out from Wilcannia for a 300 mile boat race down the Darling River. The soldiers set out in six man teams using aluminium assault craft. Digger ingenuity was used to the full in rigging up makeshift masts and sails for the race, which is expected to finish in about 10 days time at Menindee. The race is designed as a test of competitive physical endurance and sustained teamwork. The Darling was in flood when the boats launched for the start. With 300 miles to go the crews set up a cracking pace. People of Wilcannia gathered on the town bridge to watch as the craft moved into centre stream. Diggers adopted beach headgear and named boats after their own fancy. The crew will paddle ten hours a day and go ashore at nights to sleep. Its a long way to Menindee!!
