Description

Manuscript notes of WX1560 Major R.J. Barham titled 'Notes for War Diary' written while he was attached to Headquarters, 9th Division. They cover the period 27 March-17 May 1941 and describe his part in and observations of the eastward withdrawal before the German/Italian offensive of Australian units from the Barce/El Abiar theatre to the Derna area and towards Tobruk. Barham's part included liaison with Cyrenaica Command headquarters, passing Divisional orders to Australian units, arranging for transport for the units and POWs, and reconnaissance of roads. Also instructions written by Colonel Colonel Wells to Barham for the evacuation of Cairo in June 1942, and notes on dining etiquette. New item, as of 25 August 1999: military map, with overlay, prepared for (then) Major Raymond James "Tim" Barham DSO OBE, after Battle of Alamein, while Barham was serving in the North African campaign.
