Collection relating to the service of 3875 Private William Charles Matthews
Description
Studio portrait of 157 Private (Pte) Norman Edgar Matthews, 6th Light Horse Regiment (later Anzac Provost Corps), of Goulburn, NSW. Pte Matthews was a clerk before he enlisted on 22 August 1914. He embarked from Sydney on 21 December 1914 on HMAT Suevic. He was evacuated from Gallipoli on 4 September 1915. On 3 April 1916 he was taken on strength of the Anzac Provost Corps, and was promoted to Corporal on 6 April. On 4 February 1917 he was injured in Heliopolis, when the horse he was riding swerved and collided with another horse. He died from his wounds on the same day, at the 14th Australian General Hospital.
