Rolland, Robert Monteith (Lieutenant, b.1887 - d.1976)
Collection relating to the First World War Service of 2781 Lieutenant Robert Monteith Rolland, 60 Australian Infantry Battalion, Australia, France, 1916-1918, 1926.
Wallet 1 of 1 - Consists of eight letters and one envelope, one manuscript, and a document containing a translation of one of the letters from French to English. The letters, dated between 1916 and 1918, are addressed to Rolland from his wife Evelin Cope Rolland, mother Margaret Louisa Rolland, mother-in-law Mary Anne Fynney, a nurse who he met while in hospital, and a friend in France. The letters contain goodbyes and well-wishes, details of his family's experiences in Australia during the war, the arrival of Rolland's first child, and brief updates about the conflict in France after Rolland had arrived back in Australia. The letter dated 1926 was sent by Rolland's batman, L.J. Hamlyn, and contains Season's Greetings, recollections of their time in service, and an update on Hamlyn's life since his return to Australia. The manuscript, written by Rolland and titled "In a Hun Pill Box", contains details of a battle at Clapham Common and Menin Road in Belgium.
