Description

Bisque porcelain figure after the painting 'A Gentleman in Kharki' by Richard Caton Woodville, although the figure is missing its rifle. The figure is painted and the title 'A gentleman in kharki' is embossed on the front of the base and has been gone over in black, although much has worn off. On the reverse of the base is a paper label with 'LINCOLN, STUART & CO PROry.. LTD:MELBOURNE' .

History / Summary

This bisque porcelain figure was one type of souvenir depicting the image of the wounded British soldier from Richard Caton Woodville's painting 'A Gentleman in Kharki [Khaki]'. The image was a popular one for patriotic souvenirs made during the Boer War and was often combined with verses from Rudyard Kipling's poem 'The Absent Minded Beggar'.
