Vickers, James Ogilvie Ross (Flight Sergeant, b.1924 - d.1945)
Collection relating to the Second World War service of 66185 Flight Sergeant James Ogilvie Ross Vickers, No. 24 Squadron, Dutch East Indies, 1944-1945, 1947.
Wallet 1 of 2 - Consists of two folders containing correspondence, both private and official, pertaining to Vickers' service and death.
Folder 1 of 2 consists of a three-page letter addressed to Vickers' grandmother, dated 23 June 1945. Vickers writes that he is busy working and spends the time he has between operational flights maintaining his plane. He briefly describes Morotai, the weather, entertainment and recreation, and discusses the monkeys that some of the other servicemen had purchased as pets. He also mentions an air attack by Japanese forces the previous evening.
Folder 2 of 2 consists of five pieces of official correspondence addressed to Vickers' parents. Included are two telegrams and two letters informing Vickers' parents that Vickers has been reported missing and, subsequently, confirming that he was killed on 5 July 1945. One of the telegraphs also contains Vickers' identification card. Also in the wallet is one letter regarding the return of Vickers' flying log book to his parents in 1947.
Wallet 2 of 2 - Consists of Vickers' flying log book, which documents his training and service as an air bomber. The log book contains entries dated from 31 May 1944 to 1 July 1945, and includes a note by Vickers' Commanding Officer reporting that Vickers was missing and believed to have been killed in Balikpapan on 5 July 1945.
