Description

Collection relating to the Multinational Force and Observers (MFO) service in the Sinai of A47799 Corporal Edward Kym Manuel, Rotary Wing Aviation Unit, 1982.

Wallet 1 of 1 - Collection consists of a 10-page memoir Kym Manuel wrote in the 2000s of his service as a UH-1H Iroquois helicopter crewman in the Rotary Wing Aviation Unit from March to November 1982 as part of the first Australian contingent deployed with the MFO. Manuel writes of the preparations for and deployment of the helicopters, his initial impressions of Egypt and his living conditions, the abundance of land mines and unexploded ordnance around the air base, interactions and tensions with Israeli Defence Force personnel, and of observing Anzac Day in the Sinai. He also discusses his work and flight incidents, the affect weather conditions and sandstorms had on flight operations, difficulties in securing supplies, recreational activities such as sport and visits to Tel Aviv and Cairo, and relations with personnel from other member nations of the MFO. See also PR03950 for other material related to Manuel and his service with the MFO.
