'Jeff : "I wish they had 3MK7 Now!"'
One of 8 humorous cartoons collected by O216731 Squadron Leader James Henry Cox, RAAF, while attached to RAAF Base Woomera crica 1955. Collectively the cartoons provide insight into the attitudes and experience of Australian personnel of No. 1 Air Trials Unit (1ATU) Target Aircraft Flight. This unit operated the pilotless V12 Jindivik, Meteor U15 and Canberra U10 aircraft as targets for radar tracking and live firing, using surface-to-air and air-to-air weapons.
The GAF Jindivik A92-35 depicted was delivered to 1ATU on 09/04/1955. According to RAAF records it was approved for conversion to components on 17/11/55. The identity of the artist is unknown.
Sqn Ldr Cox was later awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) in December 1968, becoming an Air Commodore back in Australia.
