Description

Engineers of the 1st Field Squadron in Vietnam are currently repairing bridges and culverts along Route 23 in Phuoc Tuy province before the wet season sets in. The bridges are near Xuyen Moc a village about 14 miles south east of Nui Dat. The engineers are replacing planking in the bridges which carry much civilian traffic and generally carrying out repairs as they are needed. For the local children, the work is fascinating and wherever the engineers go they find the youngsters eager to help. One of the things which the soldiers do is lay smooth planking across the beams of the bridge so that the Vietnamese oxcarts can move across the surface without too severe a shaking. Work is being done on three bridges built previously by the Australians and on a number of culverts which have partially collapsed during the past year. The work is expected to take three days. (Also identified: Sapper Bob Long of Mt Morgan, Qld; Sapper Wayne Lambley of Mackay, Qld; Sapper Mick Lundy of Redcliffe, WA; Sapper Gary Campbell of Pascoe Vale, South Vic; Sapper Brian Forbes of Urunga, NSW; Corporal Terry Smethurst).
