Description
Gallipoli, Dardanelles, Turkey, c. 1915-05-21. A Turkish envoy at left is led blindfolded along the beach at Gaba Tepe. He has been sent by the Turks to negotiate a brief armistice or truce with the Australians so that the two sides can recover their wounded and bury their dead lying in No Man's Land. Both sides suffered many casualties in an abortive Turkish attack on Anzac positions on 1915-05-19. The soldier 2nd from right is Lieutenant-General Sir William Riddell Birdwood.
