Letters relating to the Second World War service of SX6962 Lieutenant Colonel Arthur Seaforth Blackburn, 2/3rd Machine Gun Battalion, At sea, French Mandate for Syria and Lebanon, British Mandate of Palestine, 21 April - 19 December 1941.
These letters from Blackburn to his family cover a period spanning the 2/3rd Machine Gun Battalion's embarkation from Sydney in April 1941, journey to the Middle East, the Syria-Lebanon campaign, and service through to December 1941. During the Syria-Lebanon campaign, Blackburn accepted the surrender of Damascus from the Vichy French. The 2/3rd Machine Gun Battalion remained in the Middle East as a garrison force until early 1942. Blackburn's letters to his family include detailed impressions of the culture, terrain, and sights and customs he encountered in Ceylon, Syria and Lebanon.
