Housewife: Norman Barty, National Service
Khaki cotton housewife with manufacturer stamp 'B MILBURN & CO. VICTORIA 1954 D[broad arrow symbol]D. The owner's label has '2768255 N D BARTY' written on it and another broad arrow symbol with the number 119. At one end is an open pouch that contains two cotton reels, some fawn coloured wool, green plastic thimble and safety pins. Next are pieces of flannel with needles inserted for storage. There are two pouches with flaps that are secured by brown plastic buttons. In one are small skeins of white and khaki wool, in the other are two reels of cotton and a selection of several white buttons.
Housewife (sewing kit) issued to Norman Barty when he began National Service at Puckapunyal, Victoria from the 8th October to 23rd December 1957. It is still in original condition including contents and was made by B Milburn & Co Victoria 1954. As well as completing National Service, Private (Temporary Sergeant) Norman Barty served with the Citizen Military Forces from 24 December 1957 to 30 June 1960.
