Description

Collection relating to the First World War service of 17317 Sergeant Rex Hazlewood, 1 Division Signal Company and later Australian War Records Section.

Collection consists of both original diaries and notebooks, plus typescript copies. Some of the transcripts correspond to the original diaries and notebooks, some record original writings that are no longer in existence. Hazlewood prefaces his diary with 'this is not a diary, but just a record of events and impressions committed to paper in the hope it may prove interesting to any sufficiently patient to read it'. The diaries cover his travels, and give reflective impressions of people, places and various aspects of war, with particular reference to signalers. One of the notebooks records the letters Hazlewood sent home to family members. These letters were transcribed into the notebook by Hazlewood's mother and sisters.

Also included in this collection are: 17 original postcards sent home, a 1957 news clipping re Hazlewood's stay in Exeter in 1917, a copy of a photograph of Hazlewood, his discharge certificate, biographical notes, and personal papers and certificates including birth, baptism and marriage certificates, plus some educational and vocational certificates

Hazlewood enlisted in the AIF in February 1916 and underwent training until embarking from Melbourne in May 1917 onboard HMAT Shropshire. After arriving and training in England, he was transferred to the Western Front in December. Around August 1918 he was invalided to England after contracting trench fever. Following his recovery, he transferred to the Australian War Records Section as an official photographer. Hazlewood returned to Australia in September 1919 and was discharged in December.

The Memorial also holds some of Hazlewood's photographs, with additional photographic material held at the Mitchell Library in NSW.
