Letters between Malcolm William Keshan and Dorothy Williams, 1942

Letters relating to the Second World War service of NX11067 Malcolm “Mac” William Keshan, 2/4th Australian Infantry Battalion. Malcolm William Keshan and his girlfriend Dorothy Williams wrote to each other regularly while he was a prisoner of war of the Germans during the Second World War.

In Malcolm’s 1942 letters to Dorothy, he tells her that he moved camps from a cement factory to a farm, and then to a camp for officers. He relates that the prisoners had put together an orchestra and had concerts and dances every week. He was also a “leading lady” in a show that they produced. He also shares his frustration with the delayed mail, cold weather, and dragging time. In every letter, Malcolm assures Dorothy of his love for her.

In Dorothy’s 1942 letters to Malcolm, she shares about her day-to-day activities at home in Sydney, such as work, sports, and learning to drive. She also tells him of events such as her brother’s wedding, and getting to know Malcolm’s family while he was away. She encourages him to keep his chin up, and tells him that she misses him.
Malcolm and Dorothy married after the war, in 1946.
