On 4 October 1914, the Australian Administration reported that for postal purposes two separate issues of stamps were made for use in New Guinea.

2. Current Australian postage stamps overprinted with "N.W. PACIFIC ISLANDS".

The German Colonial stamps had been printed in Berlin. All available stock captured by the Australian Forces were overprinted. They were first put on sale on 17 October and supplies were practically exhausted by the end of the year.

Official figures of are that 21851 German stamps of New Guinea and 29314 German stamps for the Marshall Islands of varying denominations were overprinted for use by the public.
