Errey, Leonard George Prentice (Lieutenant, b.1892 - d.1917)
Collection relating to the First World War service of Lieutenant Leonard George Prentice Errey DSO, MC, 9th Battalion, 1917. The collection includes three letters and one Mentioned in Despatches certificate. One typed letter, sent by Lieutenant General Sir William Birdwood, congratulates Errey on the award of his Distinguished Service Order (DSO) for "conspicuous gallantry during the attack on Polygon Wood". Errey was originally recommended for the Victoria Cross (VC) and Birdwood writes in pencil at the base of the letter that "Next time I sincerely hope it may be the V.C. which will be awarded".
Two further letters were sent to Errey's mother, one by Birdwood offering his condolsences for Errey's death in action on 4 October 1917, and one from the War Office in London informing Mrs Errey that her son was Mentioned in Despatches by Field Marshal Sir Douglas Haig on 7 November 1917.
