Collection relating to the service of 181 Private Timothy William McCristal, 1st Light Horse
Pope's Hill, Gallipoli. One of a group of seven photographs sent by 181 Private (Pte) Timothy William McCristal, 1st Light Horse, Gallipoli, to his friend 8/508 William Woods, New Zealand Expeditionary Force, in the mid-late 1920's. Pte McCristal and Woods were likely to have met while in hospital at Gallipoli recovering from wounds. Caption on back, written by Pte McCristal, reads: "Popes Hill, looking from Walkers Ridge side, where the N. Zeds [New Zealanders] were. You can see some of our men 1st A.L.H going in the trenches. The cloth in the bushes marked X was my dugout, on bottom left corner." Pte McCristal was repatriated after he was wounded and became a colourful and controversial figure in the mid-twentieth century NSW labour movement.
