Description

Ration depot in Monash Gully, Gallipoli. One of a group of seven photographs sent by 181 Private (Pte) Timothy William McCristal, 1st Light Horse, Gallipoli, to his friend 8/508 William Woods, New Zealand Expeditionary Force, in the mid-late 1920's. Pte McCristal and Woods were likely to have met while in hospital at Gallipoli recovering from wounds. Caption on back, written by Pte McCristal, reads: "Ration depot, Monash Gully. many of these men of my regiment were killed on Aug 7th. The chap standing marked x for one I know." Pte McCristal was wounded at Gallipoli on 7 August 1915, and was invalided back to Australia. Due to his background as a leader and speaker in the trade union movement, he then served briefly as a recruitment sergeant, before becoming active in the anti-conscription movement and serving nine months in gaol for the crime of sedition. He went on to run for political office some 25 times, each time unsuccessfully.
