[Sound recording] Some hearts will be joyful
Recording of the song titled, 'Some hearts will be joyful', created as part of the Music and the First World War project. Music and lyrics were written by Herbert Rule. Produced by Chris Latham, with David Hidden as vocalist and Alan Hicks on piano. These works were performed in the spirit of the time with some changes made for the modern ear.
Chris Latham, producer of this recording, notes: 'This is an illustrative piece that opens with brass and drums. It starts fast and then slows down because of the associated lyrics. There is more tempo variation than you would expect because of the material. There is imagery of the train arriving at the station in the music. During the chorus, the music slows down and then gets faster. By the end of the song, the music is a lot faster and has almost doubled in speed. The music is positive at the beginning and then becomes more reflective. It picks up speed with the arrival of the train. It is very clever as it changes character enormously throughout the song. I don't know of another piece like this one.'
