Description

Informal group portrait of six officers of C Company, 31st Battalion being served tea by three soldiers. The officers have signed around the edge of the image. Seated at the table, from left, are: Lieutenant William Macpherson; Lieutenant Douglas Pinckney Walker (foreground); Lieutenant Frank Roberston Corney (seated at back); Lieutenant Frederick Drayton (beside Corney); Lieutenant Henry Goldsmith (right foreground); and Major Charles Edward Clements (Officer Commanding C Company). 623 Private William Cullen, also of the 31st Battalion, is believed to be the soldier standing at the rear left.
After spending some four months undergoing basic training at the Broadmeadows army camp north of Melbourne, C Company, 31st Battalion, embarked on HMAT Wandilla (A62) and HMAT Bakara at Melbourne on 8 and 9 November 1915 respectively, and arrived at Suez on 7 December 19152. On 17 June 1916, having been ‘toughened up' by months of training in Egypt, the company embarked on the HMT 'Manitou' at Alexandria, Egypt, disembarking at Marseilles on 25 June 1916.
