Description

Studio portrait of 868 Private (Pte) Arthur Fibbins, 41st Battalion, of Yetman, NSW. Pte Fibbins enlisted on 28 January 1916 at Warwick, Queensland, and embarked with the 41st Battalion, D Company, aboard HMAT Demosthenes (A64) in May. Pte Fibbins was seriously wounded in the abdomen on 1 September 1918 while his unit was stationed at Hamelet, France. He was evacuated to No 61 Casualty Clearing Station where - according to a witness statement on his Red Cross Wounded and Missing file - his condition was "so grave that nothing but temporary relief could be afforded him, and little hope could be entertained of his ultimate recovery." Pte Fibbins died on 2 September 1918 and was buried in the Daours Communal Cemetery. He had previously been recommended for a Military Medal for his work as a lewis gunner during an operation near Proyart on 11-12 August 1918 but this award was not conferred.
