Distinguished Flying Cross : Major H P L Higman, RAF
Distinguished Flying Cross (Geo V). Unnamed as issued.
Major Henry Philip Lamton Higman served with the Royal Engineers during the First World War, where he was mentioned in despatches on 7 November 1917. He transferred to the Royal Air Force as a Kite Balloon officer in April 1918. Higman was awarded a Distinguished Flying Cross for actions between August and October 1918. The citation reads: 'Since August 8 this officer has rendered exceptionally valuable service. On October 10, when observing from his balloon some 2,500 yards from the lines, he was subjected to constant anti-aircraft fire, and was also attacked by four enemy machines. His balloon was riddled with hostile fire and he was compelled to descend in a parachute. Although under shell-fire, he at once had the balloon repaired and again ascended, completing his observation and furnishing most useful information.' He was also awarded a French Croix de Guerre. Squadron Leader Higman continued to serve in the RAF after the war and held posts as an Assistant Air Attache in Europe, North and South America. He transferred to the RAF Reserve in 1930. Higman retired to Queensland and died there in 1962.
