Description

Lee-Enfield No 2 Mk IV* Rifle. Receiver marked LITHGOW SHT LE III within a shield above '13 over No 2 Mk IV*. Knox form stamped D arrow D over VIC, crossed out, over 2 over 15831, crossed out, and the serial number. Butt marked 5/13, D arrow D over 2 over 226 and No 2 Mk IV* across the Commonwealth of Australia Military Forces roundel, a crown over a shield with a Kangaroo and A C over III over 1913 with 15831 crossed out. The brass butt disc has 53 IB. This rifle resembles the Short Magazine Lee-Enfield No I Mk III although the fore-end long range sight lever has been removed and a .22 calibre barrel fitted which is dated 9/38 and 226 2/39. The bolt head marked .22 No 2 has an offset firing pin.

History / Summary

The markings on this rifle indicate that it was first issued in May 1913 to the State of Victoria and re-issued to 53 (Infantry) Battalion, New South Wales in the 1930's. In September 1938 it was converted to a No 2 Mk IV* training rifle and re-issued to New South Wales Military Forces in February 1939.
