British Pattern 1885 Cavalry Trooper's Sword and Scabbard : New South Wales Cavalry
British Pattern 1885 Cavalry Trooper's sword & scabbard. The hilt has a sheet steel bowl guard with rolled edges and a cut out Maltese Cross design. It is stamped on the outside NSWC over 380. The grips are checkered compressed black leather rivetted to the tang. The slightly curved blade has a single fuller on each side to within 9 inches of the spear point. The ricasso is stamped on the left side with the issue date of /86 and WD and another Enfield mark on the right side. The steel scabbard has a fixed strap rings on each side near the throat. The scabbard has been painted overall black and is stamped NSWG C 647 over 98.
The markings on this sword indicate that it was issued to the New South Wales Cavalry in 1898. This sword belonged to Alfred Condor who was supposedly a Boer War veteran but his name does not appear on an Australian roll.
