A "mixed grill" formation of a variety of aircraft led by a captured Japanese fighter aircraft Nakajima Ki.84 "Hayate (Gale)" allied code name "Frank", of the Technical Air Intelligence Unit SWPA which had been discovered at an abandoned airfield in Luzon, Philippines after the American recapture of the island in January 1945; the first aircraft of this type was disovered on the island of Leyte. This aircraft was operated by the Technical Air Intelligence Unit, South West Pacific Area (SWPA) located at Clark Field, Luzon, Philippines from the end of January 1945. Other aircraft in the formation are a Royal Navy Seafire (lower left), a US Navy Grumman Hellcat and a P-51 Mustang. The Nakajima Ki.84 models fitted with engines exceeding 1800 horsepower could surpass the top speeds of the P47-d Thunderbolt and the P51-d Mustang at 20,000 feet.
