Description

Diary relating to the First World War service of Lieutenant Colonel Frederick William Gadsby Annand, 2nd Pioneer Battalion. The entries in this diary span the period 1 January to 31 December 1917. They begin by detailing Annand’s continuing recovery in England and subsequent return to active duty in February. It is around this time that he is awarded the Distinguished Service Order his service at Pozieres in July and August the previous year, and he notes his investiture of the award by King George V at Buckingham Palace. After returning to France, Annand’s entries once again detail the labouring and construction work that the 2nd Pioneer Battalion performs in support of the 2nd Australian Division, in particular at the Second Battle of Bullecourt in May and during the fighting near Ypres in September and October.
