Description

Originally one portion of the series was arranged by unit, while the other was arranged chronologically.

The unit-arranged portion has a three-part number system that corresponds with the system used in series AWM4. Copies were intended to have been distributed to other archival or research institutions around Australia, however it is not clear whether this happened. Items from this arrangement were however certainly placed within files that make up series AWM26, resulting in this unit-arranged portion of AWM5 being much depleted. In 1993 work began on sorting, rehousing and arranging the remainder, however shortly afterwards, ceased.

The chronologically arranged portion of the series covers AIF activities, day by day. This arrangement is what survives today as the more intact of the two, and was thus catalogued on the RecordSearch database. The items commence with 2 April 1915 and end with 31 October 1918. As they originally had no file or control numbers they were given imposed item numbers by the AWM, beginning at 1 and continuing serially to 1274. Each item number relates to a specific day.
