Description

Collection relating to the Second World War service of Private NX66840 Dudley Norman Wilkinson, band member with 2/30 Battalion. Collection consists of one small original handwritten diary kept by Wilkinson, during his time as a prisoner of war of the Japanese. Wilkinson became a POW as a result of the fall of Singapore in February 1942 and was sent to Changi. From there he spent time in various camps throughout Burma and Thailand and on completion of the railway was sent to a camp at Fukuoka in Japan, from which he was recovered in September 1945. The diary covers topics such as food, working conditions, illness and bombings. Loose pages have been incorporated into the diary with blue wool to bind them. The diary also contains a couple of poems, the occasional diagram, several recipes, several charts (temperatures, numbers killed, total POWs, lists of deaths), foreign stamps and matchbox covers. There is evidence of a couple of pages being torn out.
