Description

The grave of Second Lieutenant (2nd Lt) Geoffrey Woodhill, 20th Battalion, bearing three crosses. A university student from Wentworth Falls, NSW, 2nd Lt Woodhill enlisted in March 1915 and embarked as a Corporal with the 20th Bn, D Company, aboard HMAT Berrima (A35) on 26 June 1915. Following service at Gallipoli the 20th Bn was transferred to France where it took part in its first major offensive around Pozieres between late July and the end of August 1916. 2nd Lt Woodhill was killed shortly after his promotion during this action on 1 August 1916 by shell fire while preparing a communication trench.

The large cross at the back bears the name of both 2nd Lt Woodhill and 1179 Private (Pte) John Alan Curtis, who was killed by the same shell on 1 August 1916 near Pozieres. Following the war wooden crosses, like that seen at the front with a metal pressed name plates, were used to mark the grave sites.
