Description

Collection relating to the Second World War service of WX2149 Private Maurice Christmas, 2/32 Battalion, 1940-1949.

Wallet 1 of 1 - Collection includes an enlistment notice following Christmas' acceptance for service with the Second Australian Imperial Force, leave and railway passes for a period of leave in Perth in May 1940, a ship berthing card, and two leave passes from Egypt in October 1942. The collection also includes an August 1940 letter from Christmas' sister Kay and one, dated April 1942, from a friend in South Africa. Kay's letter was written after the siblings had enjoyed a period of leave together in London. Kay writes how much she misses Christmas, discusses the air raid precautions at her home and work, and comments on the frequency of the wardens' sirens in London. The 1942 letter discusses friends, petrol rationing in South Africa and Australia, and Japan's entry into the war. Also with the collection are two equipment inventory lists compiled in preparation for Christmas's discharge in 1949.
