Description

Collection consists of a four part digital manuscript, titled "Syd: An unwitting autobiography". The manuscript is a based on the letters Johnston wrote home, supplemented with photographs and other material. Johnston worked as a jackeroo and station overseer in Queensland before the war and the first section of the manuscript contains transcripts of letters from this period. The remaining three parts of the manuscript contain transcripts of letters written home from the time of his enlistment to the time of his death. Johnston enlisted in 1916 and saw service in France and Belgium before being killed in action on 29 September 1917 at Polygon Wood.
