Description

Members of the ADF and US Army Special Forces gather outside a building at Forward Operating Base Mirwais, near Chora. A handmade sign on the wall reads "Fort Locke", the alternate name for the base. The name is in commemoration of Sergeant Matthew Locke, Special Air Services (SAS), who was killed in action in Afghanistan on 25 October 2007. Roses are growing in the foreground. One of a series of 40 images taken by the Australian artist George Gittoes in Afghanistan in November 2008. As an independent artist Gittoes visited the Middle East Area of Operations with the support of the Australian Defence Force.
