Blackford, George "Harry" (Lieutenant, b.1917)
Collection relating to the Second World War service of NX51473 Lieutenant George Henry Stephen "Harry" Blackford, 2/20 Australian Infantry Battalion, AIF. Collection consists of two original handwritten letters written by Lieutenant Blackford home to his family and a typed transcript of both letters. Lieutenant Blackford was a prisoner of war (POW) in Malaya. The first letter is written after Lieutenant Blackford's release and is dated 14 September 1945. The letter provides information about rations; Blackford's current mental state (..."We have all grown hard and unfeeling..."); his positive thoughts towards the Chinese and their help; and thoughts of home. The second letter is written while Blackford was en route to Australia, and is dated 25 September 1945. The letter provides information about accommodation and life on the ship; putting weight back on and gaining health; and his apprehension on what Australia will be like upon return.
