Outdoor portrait of patients at Suffolk Hospital, Hampton Hall, Bury St Edmonds. 5452 Private (Pte) Robert Richard Sykes, identified back row, far left, wrote on the the verso of this card to his brother Charles Sykes "Dear Chas, Just these few lines to let you know that all is well and that my hand is better. I was wounded at Bullecourt on May 3rd. Having a good time in hospital. Would very much like to be with you all again. Will write a letter very shortly excuse this short note more to come. Yourself and the little ones from your loving brother Bob. I cannot quite close my hand yet (hand fracture metacarpel)" Pte Robert Sykes recovered from his injury and returned to France soon after this photograph was taken. He was killed in action near Villers-Bretonneux, on 8 August 1918.
