Diary of Clifford Alfred Walshe, 1916
Diary relating to the First World War service of 576 Private Clifford Alfred Walshe, 33rd Battalion. The diary covers the period from Walshe’s embarkation on HMAT Marathon at Sydney on 4 May 1916 to his arrival at Larkhill in England on 10 July 1916. The diary details the conditions and life on board the troopship, including Walshe’s time spent in the ship hospital and the cricket the men played on deck. He also gives regular updates about George Adams’ time in hospital and provides a description of the crossing the line ceremony. The diary describes the places the ship docks at including visits ashore at Fremantle and Durban and about events on board the ship while they are docked at Cape Town. Walshe notes at the end of the diary that he will, from then onwards, record his experiences in letters rather than a diary.
