Description

This folder contains 25 letters received by Field Marshal Lord Birdwood from men and women of various military and civilian positions between 1 January and 10 November 1919. Some of these correspondents were Sir George Foster Pearce (Minister for Defence), General Sir John Monash, Charles Delesalle (Mayor of Lille), and Lieutenant Colonel Arthur John Bigge (1st Baron Stamfordham and Private Secretary to King George V). Correspondence from Mrs M C Phillips of Edinburgh, Scotland, discusses the Australian and New Zealand soldiers who stayed with her whilst on leave and includes two poems written about the evacuation from Gallipoli. Other subjects discussed in these letters include the procession in London during 1919, the gift of a horse to Birdwood by Australia, the Gallipoli evacuation ‘reward’, and reminiscing about days at Anzac. There are also congratulatory messages relating to Birdwood’s baronetcy and Birdwood’s replies to these messages.
