Studio portrait of 145 Private (Pte) William John Kisler. A postal assistant from Ballarat, Victoria, he embarked with the 39th Battalion aboard HMAT Ascanius (A11) from Melbourne on 27 May 1916. Pte Kisler was promoted to Lance Corporal on 7 November 1916 and then to Corporal (Cpl) on 9 May 1917. Cpl Kisler was killed in action in France on 31 August 1918. He was 25 years old. This photograph belonged to William Thomas Collins who collected photographs of his friends prior to their embarkation.
