Description

Sergeant John Wilkinson SX12653 discusses his Second World War experiences interviewed by Richard Aspden on 15 January 2014. John Wilkinson, also known as Jock, covers his experiences in Darwin and New Guinea as well as biographical information. In March 1940, John joined the veterinary section attached to the Light Horse as Corporal in South Australia. In 1941 he was a bombardier with the 13 Field Regiment, then gunner with the 2/14th Field Regiment. In 1944 he became platoon sergeant of the Papuan Infantry Battalion and in 1945 Platoon Sergeant of the Pacific Islands Regiment. In 1945 he was promoted to Warrant Officer 1 of the 2nd New Guinea Infantry Battalion.
